Description: Plena is a genre of music and dance that emerged in the town of Ponce during the early 1900’s. Participants will learn the basic Plena drumming techniques on the 3 main hand drums used to play this music.

Description: Son Jarocho is the music of Mexico in the state of Veracruz. This music is heavily influence by African elements of music. Participants will learn basic steps of Son Jarocho.

Dance Workshop C1: : The Art of Bomba Dancing

Presenter: Members of Africaribe

Description: Bomba is a genre of music and dance that evolved in the sugar cane plantations during the time of slavery in Puerto Rico. Influenced by African rhythms, Bomba reflects the lives and struggle of Afro-Puerto Ricans in the plantation. Participants will learn the basic body language use in dancing Bomba Sicá and Bomba Yubá.

Presenter: Members of Tierra Colombiana Folkloric Dance Company

Description: Cumbia is the musical genre of Colombia and dance in other countries in South and Central America. Its origins are found in the sugarcane plantation during the times of slavery. There are many stiles of Cumbias. Participates will learn basic steps of Cumbia Costeña.
